In Ontario, only a licensed electrical contractor (ECRA/ESA licence) may be hired for electrical work, and the contractor files a notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority so it can be inspected. Gas appliances and fuel lines must be handled by a technician certified by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. Plumbing and building permits come from the municipality.
